A fever can be one of the most worrying things to see in your child, especially when that little forehead feels hot and they are not quite themselves. Our instinct is often to bring the temperature down as quickly as possible. But what if we paused for a moment and considered what the fever is actually doing?

In homeopathy, we see fever as an important part of the body’s natural response to infection. Rather than viewing it simply as something to suppress, we can see it as the body working hard to restore balance and create the conditions it needs to heal.

A raised temperature is often accompanied by other signs — thirst or no thirst, wanting to be wrapped up or throwing the covers off, restlessness or deep sleep, sweating, irritability or wanting lots of cuddles. These details can all form part of the picture when choosing a homeopathic remedy.

Supporting a child through a fever can therefore be about more than simply watching the number on the thermometer. It can be about keeping them comfortable, offering plenty of fluids, allowing them to rest, and gently observing what their body is telling us.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is to slow down, tune in and trust that the body knows what it is doing.
